The Centre for Humanitarian Leadership

November 10, 2021 By Caitlin Jordan

The Centre for Humanitarian Leadership (CHL) is an innovative collaboration between Deakin University and Save the Children that combines quality humanitarian practice with academic rigour.

CHL are transforming humanitarian leaders through their accredited university courses and influencing how humanitarian organisations, and the system, respond to the increasingly complex humanitarian environment.

The brief:

We were initially engaged at the end of 2020 to work event branding and collateral for the 2021 Humanitarian Leadership Conference: Who are the Humanitarians? including:

  • Event logo and brand concept
  • Prospectus
  • Suite of social media assets

In 2021, we were hired to work on the following items:

  • Impact Report – a 30 page follow up report outlining the impact of the conference
  • Capacity Statement – a 4 page brochure outlining who CHL are, what services they offer, their research pillars and other key information about the Centre
  • 2021 Annual Report

Being the first ever annual report created for the Centre, the key project objectives were to:

  • utilise CHL’s brand assets and colours in a fresh and exciting way to engage with various corporate stakeholders
  • show harmony between the Centre’s branding and the conference branding, but ensure each piece of collateral was clearly discernible from one another
  • design clear visuals to demonstrate highlights and achievements of both a ‘historic’ and ‘recent’ nature, and separate them accordingly into clear sections.

This year (in 2022) we have been working on busy working on the logo, branding, assets and event Prospectus for the 2023 Humanitarian Leadership Conference: Re-engineering the global disaster response system (more on that soon!). We also updated the design of the Capacity Statement brochure and did a small print run for the Centre on EcoStar 100% recycled uncoated post-consumer waste; as part of our sustainability strategy.

How is this ethical?

CHL champions collaborative humanitarian action that supports the agency of affected communities, elevates local actors, and promotes social justice.

The Centre adopts a hybrid approach to education and practical humanitarian experience, delivered through a leadership lens. They offer a range of services, including:

  • Accredited university education courses and pathways through Deakin University
  • Academic research and policy
  • Globally recognised events and proven engagement expertise.

The result is a rich and diverse community of leaders dedicated to teaching, understanding, analysing, demonstrating, and constantly refining what it means to be an effective humanitarian leader.

In addition, the 2021 Humanitarian Leadership Conference held in April 2021 (online for the first time) was a huge success! More than 1000 delegates from across 80 different countries came together to explore what a genuinely transformed humanitarian system looks like, from the actors involved and ways of working to the very definition of what constitutes a humanitarian crisis.

Ethical Design Co. is a proud partner of CHL and a huge supporter of all the wonderful work the Centre is doing in the global humanitarian and educational sectors.
